GENERIC BRAKE LINING INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

Lining installation can be accomplished with a few simple hand tools. A drill press machine and hollow rivet set can also be of great help.

1. Mark the wheel assemblies LH and RH, and place an index mark or line where the old lining is mated end-for-end in the wheel.

2. Remove the old lining from the wheel “drum”, by using a hand drill and bit to remove the peened heads on the outside of the wheel. Be careful to not damage the wheel or enlarge the holes which should be 1/8” (.125”)

3. Push the rivets through the wheel with a small punch and hammer.

4. Remove the old lining and set it aside.

5. Clean the wheel and lining mounting holes. Complete your inspection of the wheel and its general condition.

6. Roll out the new lining inside the wheel. Mark the lining where the two ends meet and then cut outside that mark with a saw, abrasive disk or shear so that the lining is slightly over length by about 3/32” (.09”).

7. Refit the lining into the wheel. It is best if the lining is a slight ‘press fit’ into the wheel as that will assist the rivets when installed. Trim the lining further with a file or abrasive disk until the ends fit snugly together and into the wheel.

8. Holding the lining in place, use a .125” (1/8”) drill to back drill the lining holes using the wheel for hole alignment and guidance. DO NOT FORCE THE BIT. Using a small block of wood to back up the lining where you drill is an excellent idea.

9. Once the holes are all located, mark the lining with index marks on the wheel and the lining for later re-alignment.

10. Remove the lining from the wheel.

11. Using a drill press with a limiting depth adjusted, or a hand drill with a depth collar, set the drill or end mill to penetrate just 5/64” (.08”), into the lining with a counter bore bit just large enough to accommodate the rivet head. Again, using a wooden backer is a good idea to keep the lining from being damaged.

12. Once all of the holes are counter bored, reinstall the linings using the index marks, and align some of the lining holes with the holes in the wheel.

13. Install your rivets with the heads inside the wheel, and then use a punch or rivet anvil to set the tails on the outside of the wheel assy.

14. Drive Safely!
