Removal of the Propeller Nut from Tapershaft Hubs

ORIGINAL QUESTION:

I am getting close to putting a prop back on my Luscombe and I need to take the old prop flange nut and retainer clip out of the old hub first. My new hub didn't come with a nut and retainer. I've been trying to remove the old one without success and I found that it is not as easy as it seemed at first.

ANSWER:

The process for removal of the clip (and nut) from the prop hub is relatively simple.

You will require four AN 3-5 bolts, or similar sized clevis pins or screws; One screw style band clamp of approximately 2.5" to 3.5" inches in diameter, masking tape, and a screw driver to operate the band clamp.

  1. First mount the hub securely in a vice (or on an airplane crank)
  2. Locate / insert the bolts, clevis pins or screws into the "holes" drilled in the hub at the outer circumference of the snap ring groove.
  3. Temporarily tape these in an upright position.
  4. When all four are installed and taped upright, install the band clamp around the circumference of the hub, and over the top of the four bolts/screws.
  5. Tighten the band clamp slowly, while maintaining the screws in an upright position.
  6. The "C" clip will compress, (do not compress it into an interference fit on the hub nut)
  7. A tug on the propeller retaining nut after the "C" clip is compressed will allow the nut and clip to fall free from the hub.
