For the installation of a Scott 3200 tail wheel

On Luscombe 8 Series aircraft

Doug Combs

Installation of the Scott 3200 tail wheel is acceptable for installation on the Luscombe 8 series aircraft, although it was designed for much larger aircraft. It is therefore heavier by design, and slightly more durable and robust than is required. It is also much more expensive than other tail wheel options available to the owner. The Scott 3200 may be the correct installation for some aircraft and aircraft uses, however, if the operator is simply trying to correct a shimmy or other tail wheel defect, he is well advised to fully investigate the existing tail wheel condition and most particularly the tail spring and tail wheel rigging, to ascertain proper angles and good component condition.

Operations

The Scott tail wheel will steer and function normally in all ground and flight operations without modification to the steering mechanism. However, it will be more sluggish and less responsive than other tail wheels approved with the type design due to the fact that the steering arm is longer for more mechanical advantage.

Round Rudder applications

The narrow steering arms of the Luscombe’s round rudder, or an improperly rigged rudder in Luscombe applications will therefore NOT provide enough steering input to actuate the breakaway function and allow full caster of the Scott 3200 tail wheel without some further modifications.

The early style rudder horn (PN 18432), used primarily on round-tip rudder applications, may be replaced with the longer square rudder horn (PN 48490). In the alternative, and often simpler, there is a service kit consisting of two arms that can be riveted to the round rudder horn which perform the same lengthening and geometric functions as the square rudder horn.

These service kit parts consist of two arm extensions identified as PN SK4149-2 (left) and PN SK4149-3 (right), which are simply positioned on the original round rudder horn and installed with structural rivets. Contact Classic Aero Support for procurement of these components.

Square Rudder applications

The later style rudder horn (PN 48490), typically used on the square-tip rudder applications, has a longer steering arm and actuating throw which should fully actuate the Scott 3200 tail wheel if the rudder is properly rigged per the TC data sheet. If full tail wheel castering is not achieved, then one must check the rigging of the tail wheel spring, rudder and rudder pedals to ascertain the problem.

CAS can obtain specific field approval for the installation of this component on your aircraft if that is desired. Contact us at www.luscombesilvaire.info or (480) 650-0883.
