Luscombe Aircraft are known to have ‘heavy’ ailerons in flight due to the long
wing and the cable drag in the actuating system.
While
the long wing cannot be easily resolved, proper rigging and the simple
maintenance of your cable system can reduce the aileron system drag and control
“heaviness” by more than 70%.
Most
Luscombe aircraft have suffered deferred maintenance in this system over their
60+ year life. The plain bearing pulleys are often worn, or the lubricants have
become sticky. Often the open bearings in the ailerons themselves are rusted
and in poor condition (missing balls or without lubrication), the fairleads may
not be properly aligned, and often the cable tension is incorrect.
The
Featherlight aileron service kit for your Luscombe airplane consists of a
detailed report and instructions on how to renew and maintain the Luscombe
aileron control system.
It
includes special waterproof grease for the bearings, a dry lubricant for service
and bearing reconditioning of the aileron bearings, and a full set of NEW, FAA
PMA certified pulleys for use in the aileron system.
